Ely, Minnesota came
to prominence in the late 1800’s as a mining
community. Mining and logging were the prominent
occupations for Ely residents for generations,
and are still an important element in our local
economy today. Then beginning in the early
1900’s, vacationers began coming to Ely to
experience the fishing and wilderness unique to
northern Minnesota. Unsuitable for farming,
the Ely area retained its wilderness uniqueness
until today, and has now become a nationally
known vacation destination. Ely has four
seasons of recreational activities. Summer is
our prime season, but fall colors, spring
fishing, winter dog sledding and snowmobiling,
and quiet season getaways are just some of the
reasons vacation travelers come to Ely Minnesota
throughout the year. |
